Surviving the 4th Trimester

Having a baby is incredible, but it is also incredibly challenging.

Before my son was born I thought I knew exactly what I needed to make the transition into parenthood as seamless as possible. But until you're there it's hard to know exactly what will work best for YOUR child. Below I have shared a few products that did everything from easing my physical recovery to helping me get my errands done with a newborn.

- First thing is first, where is your child going to sleep when you get home? I bought the HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper Bassinet. It is FANTASTIC. Having Luke right next to the bed allows me to easily nurse at all hours of the night, this was particularly helpful when he spent more time attached to my breast then he did off. I love the mesh walls to allow good air circulation, plus I can stare at his sweet little face whenever I desire. It swivels to get out of your way when you get into and out of bed. Furthermore, the sidewall lowers when pressure is placed on it making it easy to get baby in and out. C-section or Vaginal delivery, recovering from childbirth is painful and anything that keeps your baby safe while keeping them close will make your life easier. I bought the higher end model, but I never used any of the extra features (music, vibration, light, or feeding timer). I recommend saving the money and getting the base model.

- If you are like me, you will be deliriously exhausted when you get home from the hospital. However, I was so hyper alert to the well being of my son that I hated having him out of my sight. To ease this transition and allow me to get the sleep I so desperately needed, I bought a monitor to alert me if he stopped breathing. I recommend the Owlet Baby Monitor, watching over your child so you don't have to. (See my Product Review comparing the different baby monitors for more info)

- To maximize baby sleep I recommend using swaddles to remind your infant of the safety and security of the womb. Newborns take time to transition from the peace of the mom-Jacuzzi into the loud hot/cold harsh world; swaddles can help ease that transition. There are many excellent brands; Bebe Au Lait Muslin Swaddle Blankets are some of my favorites. They are cozy and come in beautiful patterns. Another innovative must-have is the Hooray Littles swaddle, it can be used during all those times when baby is required to be harnessed in. (See my Product Reviews comparing my favorite swaddle brands for more info)

The Hooray Littles Swaddle for when baby needs to be harnessed

- Once you have had a little sleep and are ready to get some stuff done around the house I recommend using a baby wrap or sling. Personally, I used the Solly Wrap and I LOVED it. A wrap allows you to have a custom fit carrier to keep your tiny little one safe and close. Translating into a quiet and happy baby. The Solly Baby Wrap is lightweight, soft, easy to tie, and comes in many beautiful colors and patterns. I will be writing a Product Review specifically on my experience with various carrier brands and styles in the near future.

- When you do finally leave the house you need a diaper bag that is easy to pack and holds everything to take care of baby (hint pack two outfits for unforeseen diaper explosions). The Ju-Ju-Be Collection makes me so happy. It is beautiful, antimicrobial, and easy to clean. PLUS, my Ju-Ju-Be Legacy Collection B.F.F. can be worn as a backpack preventing shoulder and back strain. Their bags are available in multiple styles, and patterns-- all with the same wonderful properties. Furthermore, they also make bibs, pacifier holders, lunch bags and little zipper pouches to keep you organized.

- I am the primary grocery shopper in our house; something that became a challenge after our son was born. After many failed attempts at grocery shopping while carrying my son... placing him in a baby carrier... and then dragging around a stroller with the grocery cart; I found one of my favorite new baby products. The BinxyBaby! It's a hammock for your shopping cart, making the whole experience painless. My son is happy, safe, and there is still plenty of room in my cart for groceries. (Read my Product Review to learn more and for a discount coupon)

- At some point your baby is going to be congested, have gas, or be uncomfortable from their vaccinations; it is a good idea to be prepared BEFORE it happens so you can address their need quickly. At exactly 3 weeks old, Luke became inconsolable. After over 30 mins of offering everything I could think of, food, changing his diaper, and checking him over to ensure there was nothing hurting him (ie hairs wrapped around fingers/toes, tight waistbands, tags irritating his skin); I was at a loss for why he was so upset.  Thankfully, I had stocked my baby medicine cabinet before he was born full of Little Remedies. I gave him some Little Remedies Tummys Gas Relief Drops and within 5 mins he started burping and his cries stopped. Also in my baby medicine drawer is Little Remedies Tummys Gripe Water (I have not noticed any effect when giving to my son during his crying episodes), and Little Remedies Tylenol (used only once after his 2mo vaccinations). Another MUST HAVE is a Nosefrida Baby Nasal Aspirator. Yes this is the one where you put your mouth on a tube and literally suck your child's boogers out of their nose. It sounds disgusting, but there is a filter keeping it all totally sanitary; and it works AMAZING. Just after he turned 2mo I got a cold and passed it to Luke. He would wake every 30-60 mins at night because he was congested and I would have to suction his nose. Without the Nosefrida Baby Nasal Aspirator Luke would not have been able to effectively eat or sleep. Nasal suctioning is most effective when combined with saline drops such as Little Remedies Noses Saline Spray/Drops to loosen the mucus.
Some of my favorite items for the medicine cabinet

- Now that we have addressed all the baby needs, lets talk about you mama. To help yourself through your postpartum recovery creating a Mama Care Kit for yourself is a must. Some key items to handle all your lady aches: Tucks for swelling and/or hemorrhoids, Always Diapers to help you through the bleeding of those first couple days (much more comfortable then the mesh panties from the hospital), huge pads for once the bleeding slows and when you no longer want to wear diapers. I also recommend investing in some form of abdominal compression. I bought the Mama Strut Postpartum Support Pelvic Binder System with Ice/Heat Therapy . It provided amazing vaginal support, keeps an ice pack exactly where you need it, and reduced my pain in the weeks after giving birth. The down side is it made me feel lumpy-- not exactly how you want to think of yourself in the days immediately after delivery. I have heard great things about the Belly Bandit , but have not used it myself.

Moms Of SoCal PTPP 2016 Review

Prenatal to Preschooler Party 2016 (May 15, 2016)

 Photo Op

The turnout for the PTPP 2016 was just under 100 families. This was the first event of such a large scale for the Moms of SoCal Inland Empire chapter.

Raffle Prize Table

- I loved the educational opportunities at the event. The Safe Kids booth specifically did an amazing job. My husband now knows exactly what to look for when buckling in our baby =)
- I also felt the ladies at the Chat Corner were very well informed, they helped me with a question I had about our over-complicated car seat. Unfortunately, their corner was not well marked so I fear many people missed out on their knowledge.

Fun Kids Activities sponsored by Children's Lighthouse Learning Center

- I knew they were going to have a diaper changing area, but there were no signs to mark where it was and none of the vendors knew it's location so we ended up changing the baby in the back of our SUV. This was also an issue for breastfeeding. The website said there was going to be a nursing lounge, but I couldn't find one and again none of the vendors knew what I was talking about so I just fed my son at an area of chairs.

-->I specifically asked about these concerns and learned that signs and banners were originally posted, but the building required them all to be taken down because it was a new facility.

Energetic Performance by Twinkle Time

- The live entertainment by the dynamic musical guest Twinkle Time had the kids bouncing around and singing.

Surprise Visit by Cinderella
- The kids were very excited by the surprise visit from a favorite Disney Princess.

Lots of Vendor Booths Outside

- While they had all the components to make an event successful, vendors, food, raffle, live entertainment, a princess, even printed programs with the day's schedule.--> People still didn't seem to know what was happening when, or where they should go. Maybe having an MC to keep up the energy and keep everyone informed would help.
- I would also recommend having a popular kid's radio station as one of the vendors to provide fun music between performances of the scheduled entertainment.

My 1st Mother's Day Favorites

As a new mom, Mother's Day is particularly special to me this year. Having lost my mother 2.5 yrs ago and my grandma last year, Mother's Day became a painful time for me. Now with the addition of my beautiful son things have changed. In honor of a renewed hope and joy in my life I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite things.

- Ju-Ju-Be Diaper Bag (above): I love my BFF, it has plenty of room to hold everything I need and fits comfortably on my back; keeping my hands free. Plus it's adorable.
- Ju-Ju-Be Be Quick Wristlet (above): I don't know what I would do without this stylish little wristlet. It is compact, yet it easily fits everything I need to preform a diaper change. You just grab and go.
- Mama Bear t-shirt (above): I proudly wear my Mama Bear shirt by June and Kate.
- Bravado Designs Womens' Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra (above): Wearing my Cherry colored Body Silk Seamless nursing bra by Bravado makes me feel a little bit sexier, all while keeping me in optimal comfort.
- Mama Bear Floral Hoodie: For those days when I need a cozy sweatshirt, there is nothing better then the feminine print with a beautiful Mint 'Mama Bear' by Loved by Hannah and Eli.

- Mama Necklace: Loved by Hannah and Eli also has gorgeous necklaces for all the special women in your life.

- Matching shirts with my little: I just love this brand, Faith and Finn, and the message they promote. Twinning with my little man just makes me smile :)

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate being a mama and say thank you to all the wonderful mothers in your life. While candles, perfume, and flowers are always lovely sometimes it's nice to celebrate Mother's Day with a few things that scream 'I love being a mama.'

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

A chance to connect

Whether you are expecting your first child or a seasoned veteran who can wrangle your tiny ones without spilling your latte- spending time with other mothers is important to your emotional health. The pregnancy and postpartum periods are full of hormonal surges and emotional exhaustion; not to mention the stress of your body becoming a human ark and then the human equivalent of a jersey cow. It's hard. And just as your beautiful little mini-me starts to sleep long enough for you to feel rested, then they hit a growth spurt and become mommy-velcro.

Few people understand the demands you are under the way other mothers do. Being able to share the joys and stresses of parenting is pivotal to staying sane. So it is important to get involved in the groups near you.

If you live in Southern California, Moms of SoCal is a group to check out. Moms of SoCal is a group that is dedicated to educating and supporting parents from prenatal to preschool. You don't want to miss their upcoming event: Prenatal to Preschool Party. It is going to have lots of fun activities for kids under 5 years old and great vendors. It will be a wonderful family-friendly day.

I will be there with my family and hope to see you and yours. I would love to meet you; so make sure you say "Hi"!

My Birth Story: When Nothing Goes As Planned

Let me start by saying the key to all birth plans is flexibility... and my birth story is no exception.

I spent the months prior to my due date carefully writing my detailed birth plan, and taking natural birthing classes. I chose the Bradley Method because it was what my mother had used and I wanted to walk in her footsteps. I loved reading stories of other mothers feeling empowered and in tune with their bodies as they welcomed their children into this world. I was so excited for my turn that I had my hospital bag packed months before my due date, just in case. I welcomed the contractions I had in the evenings, envisioning each pain bringing me closer to seeing my son.

As the weeks ticked by I prayed for positive news from my OB... this week I would show progress, my cervix would FINALLY start to prepare for his delivery. Yet each week brought the same statement, "no change". My due date was no different, I went to the OB and she said those two disappointing words one more time, she then went on to schedule visits for the following two weeks predicting my son would stay put a while longer. Scared I was headed for an induction I desperately searched my resources looking for natural methods to start labor, but found nothing I hadn't already tried... lots of walking, sex, orgasm, nipple stimulation, teas, spicy food even pineapple.

The next day I woke up and showered, determined to get some labor inducing exercise in. However, as I sat on the couch brushing my hair I suddenly felt as though I was leaking. Despite my medical knowledge I wasn't sure what was happening, the third trimester offered too many options... So I waited. Not only did the leaking persist, it increased. Excited and a little nervous I called my husband, he needed to come home and pack (unlike me, he had decided to wait until the birth was imminent). Immediately I realized all my expectations were about to change. My birth plan involved laboring at home with candles, music, my yoga ball ,and a warm bath; then showing up at the hospital just in time to push and deliver our son.

Once at the hospital, now 6 hours after my water broke, still no sign of contractions-- I was still VERY comfortable, aside from the fact that anytime I would walk it felt like I was peeing myself. Having my water break without the onset of labor meant I would have to be induced. It also meant I was now fighting the clock-- once the amniotic sac breaks the risk of infection increases significantly; most places try to deliver the baby within 24hrs and induction is a slow process.

Over the next 17 hours the wonderful doctors and midwives would try everything to get my body to start dilating. I was given Cytotec (a pill placed at my cervix to chemically induce change), then a Foley bulb was placed (they literally fill a balloon with fluid to put pressure on your cervix and induce dilation). The contractions were strong and I was sick from the pain, but my yoga ball brought relief and I charged on focusing on all Ihad learned. Finally, Pitocin was started and aggressively increased. My son's heartrate dropped and my movements were restricted, the pain became unbearable. I was informed I still wasn't dilating. I felt defeated, every other woman in my immediate family had given birth without pain medications; now my only chance of avoiding a C-section was to get an Epidural and allow my body to relax.

About 20 mins after the epidural was placed I finally had some relief from the pain. Exhausted, physically and emotionally I desperately tried to sleep. Four hours later, the midwife announced I still had not made any progress, I began to panic. Furthermore, if I didn't make progress soon I would need a C-section. Fighting back tears of fear, feeling robbed of the birth story I wanted, my husband and I came together and prayed. We asked God for wisdom, guidance and His help to keep our son and myself safe. Feeling at peace I tried to get more sleep.

Waking from my short nap I instantly knew something was different. There was increased pressure in my pelvis with each contraction. Excited and scared I asked to be checked again. Her eyes met mine as she announced I was 7cm. I fought back tears of joy as relief rushed over me. My body wasn't broken, I COULD do this!

From that point on things moved quickly. Less than 2 hours later, I had a sudden realization something was changing. I was overwhelmed. My husband alerted the nurse who checked me and quickly began prepping the room as she proclaimed it was time to push. I followed my body's lead in and less than 10 minutes later our son was born.

As I laid in the delivery room, a rush of emotions covered me. This is my son. I am a mother. I did it. I realized that while nothing during the past 48hrs had gone as planned and I had received almost every intervention possible, his delivery was incredible. My body is not broken. I am not weak. And I regret none of the decisions I made that day because the most important goal was accomplished: my son and I are healthy. It truly was a moment I will forever cherish.

The final countdown...

I'm 39 weeks and 2 days, but who's keeping track... it's the final countdown of my pregnancy and I can hardly wait to meet our little man. Each day that passes seems like it is getting longer and time is passing more slowly... Of course, it doesn't help that every time I see my OB she announces there are no signs of him showing his face anytime soon. In an effort to make the coming days/ weeks pass more quickly I scoured the internet looking for ideas to fill my time. Below is a list of my favorite ideas 10 for the final countdown of pregnancy.

1. Pamper yourself- Get a massage, a mani/ pedi, facial, whatever relaxes you. This week I got a mani/pedi, complete with blue polish in honor of our son. Not only was it relaxing, but now I will have beautiful nails in all my post-delivery photos-- even if the rest of me is an exhausted mess.

2. Visit your friends- In the weeks after baby is born, your primary focus will be this new little person and basic survival. Take some time now to see your friends and do the fun activities that may take a backseat until everything settles down as you learn to balance parenthood.

3. Stock the fridge/ Pantry- The last thing you want to be worried about when you get home from the hospital is needing to run to the grocery store because there is no toilet paper/ milk/ etc.

4. Final baby prep- Make sure you know where baby is going to sleep when they come home and that you have the diapers, bottles/ breastfeeding supplies you will need. This is also a good time to ensure you have enough baby laundry washed to get you through the first week (onesies, sheets, blankets, burp clothes, etc).

5. Postpartum prep- No matter how your little once makes their appearance into the world, you will need supplies to get you through the coming weeks. Some essentials include: Tucks (to soothe your nether regions), extra absorbent pads or adult diapers (for bleeding and incontinence in the weeks after delivery), ice packs (to reduce pain and swelling), disposable underwear (you don't want to ruin your cute panties), and a peri- spray bottle (to clean yourself when toilet paper sounds like sand paper).

6. Quality time- Enjoy your final days with your man. Go on a date, or several, have lots of sex, and just soak up some alone time. Once baby is born everything is going to change, take some time to cherish one another and strengthen your relationship so that when you are exhausted and stressed out you can remember why you love one another.

7. Hospital Prep- Make sure you have your hospital bags packed, the car seat installed, confirm the best way to get to the hospital during rush hour, pre-register at the hospital if possible, and make sure all your family and friends know where to go when they get that anticipated call.

8. Deep Clean your Home- This could mean you cleaning or hiring a maid to make sure everything is ready for your bundle of joy... and all those visitors who will be dropping by to visit in the coming weeks.

9. Order dessert- Now don't go overboard because you don't want to be delivering a 12lb baby, but give yourself permission to have a small splurge before you feel the pressure to drop all the baby weight you have been slowly accumulating the last 10 months.

10. Sleep- As much as you can, sleep in, rest and enjoy doing the least amount you possibly can before your life is ruled by the ever-changing schedule of the tiny dictator you are so excited to meet.

Above all else, try to enjoy your final days of pregnancy- that special bond you share as you quietly talk to your belly and smile when you feel baby squirming inside you- then look forward to when sneezing won't make you pee yourself and you can finally resume your favorite sleep positions comfortably.
